What should we wear to our family portrait session?
This is one of the top questions I get asked when booking family sessions. Here are some things to think about to help you decide what to wear.
Wear something you feel great in!
You will be standing, sitting, and walking. Choose something that you feel great in while doing any of those things. If when sitting, you notice yourself tugging at the hemline, ask yourself if this is your most confident choice.
If your eyes can see it, so can the camera…
This is a good rule to remember when you start asking yourself questions like, do I need to iron this? Can you see through this? Does this strap show? If you can see it, so can the camera. So yes, please, iron out wrinkles etc. And no, I cannot just edit that out. That would be intense editing on every portrait (we are talking about multiple additional hours of editing) which would come with an additional fee. It’s best to just take care of it prior to your session. A few minutes of ironing before the session beats additional hours of editing later.
Should we match?
That is totally up to you. You can be as matchy as you want. Your portraits are about you and your family, so it should reflect your style. Whether you choose to match or not, everyone should look like they belong together. Your outfits should coordinate and compliment each other. For example, if the little brother is wearing a Christmas sweater, then the little sister should probably not wear a hot pink spring dress. Does that make sense?
Bring a blanket that coordinates.
If you choose to bring a blanket to sit on instead of sitting directly on the grass or logs, then think of your blanket as an extension of your outfits. It should coordinate and compliment you all as well. If you have a neutral colored blanket, like cream, those are preferable but any blanket that coordinates will do. Remember, it will show, so make sure you are ok with the one you choose to bring. Also, bring your blanket in a waterproof bag as we won’t be using it the entire time.
Be you!
As you have noticed, I am not telling you to wear or not wear certain colors. One of the purposes of your session is to showcase your family right now at this stage of life. You are beautiful and unique! What you all choose to wear should reflect that! So, wear what feels good! If your family likes to dress up, do it! If your family is super casual, then be super casual. It is your choice and I am honored to be chosen to help you capture your beautiful family and cherished memories.
